Tongue piercing.

My experience: I got my tongue pierced about 3 weeks ago (9th May, 2009: Mothers Day). I never thought of getting it done, until like 2 weeks before I got it. I've gotten plenty on my ears, my lip pierced and belly done, and I started getting interested in tongue piercings. Getting it pierced was fast and wasn't as painful as my other piercings. My tongue swelled for the first week or so, but I did not drool or bleed while getting pierced. Some people do, but it's completely normal.
About getting it pierced: My piercer, Joseph had me go get a cold slurpy, and when I came back he'd gotten the tools out and ready. He asked me to rinse my mouth for 30 seconds and then he checked underneath my tongue, for any veins. He clamped my tongue, marked the spot where it was gonna be pierced, told me to hold out my tongue and not put it back in, and pierced it. He took the needle out, and put in the barbell, screwed on the ball, and told me to slowly close my mouth. It was pierced from bottom up, and was fairly very quick. The pain is very minimal. Biting your tongue is heaps painful, you'd think a needle through it would hurt so much more. But it doesn't. The barbell they used is longer than the thickness of your tongue, to accommodate with the swelling as your tongue will need space. Usually after 2 weeks you will need to see your piercer to fit a shorter bar.
Aftercare: Tongue piercings heal in 2 - 6 weeks. You may get a discharge, a yellowish whitish colour, but it's normal. It's a mixture of lymph and body fluids that are part of the healing process. You can use Listerine to rinse your mouth but you should dilute Listerine with water (50-50) because of it's high alcohol con tenet. H2Ocean Oral Rinse, which contains natural sea salt, natural enzymes and minerals help cleanse your oral piercing. ($12:95 @ Industrie8) Rinse 2 - 3 times a day, and after eating anything.
What to eat: Cold foods are better tolerated than hot foods. Avoid eating spicy food in early stages after piercing. Hot food causes your blood vessels to expand or let more blood flow through. Vitamin C and Zinc supplements help in healing faster. To minimize swelling after piercing, cold drinks are recommended, and antibacterial anti-inflammatory throat lozenges. Avoid excessive alcohol, party drugs and smoking in early stages of healing as these may increase swelling.
Healing: A tongue piercing should be very comfortable after 2 weeks. However the piercing is not permanent until 6 months have elapsed. Don't play with your jewelery against your teeth, press it into your gums, or chew on your piercing as this can lead to the formation of scar tissue and damage teeth. Avoid putting anything dirty in your mouth and refrain from kissing and oral sex during the healing phase. Pain, redness, lumps and unusual discharge may be to infection.
